Protecting children from radicalisation

The Lambeth Prevent Programme offers a range of resources and support to help schools to protect pupils from radicalisation, in line with DfE guidance.

Lambeth is a priority area for local Prevent action. Prevent is part of the national counter-terrorism strategy and aims to safeguard people from being drawn into terrorism.

The expectations of the Prevent Duty for schools and early years settings focuses on two key areas: proactive and reactive support.

Proactive: building the resilience of young people to be drawn into terrorism.

How can you do that?

Embed British values across age range and subject. Book your free embedding British values workshop for staff.
Build a safe space for young people to express their frustrations and have difficult conversations. Look out for "extreme dialogue" training *coming soon*.
Equip them with critical thinking skills so they are resilient to fake new, conspiracy theories and radicalisation. Book your free workshop with the Prevent Officer.
Provide opportunities for them to be involved in their community and have a stake in their society.
Provide young people with knowledge around the risks and signs of radicalisation. Book your free workshop with the Prevent Officer. (Secondary schools only).
Teach them about prejudice and equal rights through history. Book your free workshop with the Prevent Officer (primary and secondary).

Reactive: Ensuring your staff are equipped to recognise vulnerabilities/signs that someone is being drawn into terrorism and responding effectively and proportionately.

How can you do that?
Use the questionnaire in the toolkit to test your staff's knowledge
Book free Prevent training for staff and specialist training for designated safeguarding leads (see training section)
Build partnerships by booking a visit with the Prevent Education Officer who can offer advice on referrals and offer bespoke support for your school.

Prevent Duty Toolkit

We have developed a helpful questionnaire for you to give to your teaching staff, to test their knowledge of the Prevent Duty and their safeguarding responsibilities. This will help you to identify where further Prevent training is needed. You can book free training through this page.

You can also use the checklist and risk-assessment to ensure that your school has covered all areas of the Prevent Duty. Once you have completed it, send it to the Prevent Education Officer, Lydia Nixon, at lnixon@lambeth.gov.uk and arrange a visit to discuss what free resources are available for your school.

You will also find advice booklets for parents, teachers and school leaders. To order a box of physical booklets, please email Elyanne Hatton: Elyanne.HATTON@education.gov.uk.
